Los Gatos gives drains two problems the flatland cities do not have: age and grade. The Almond Grove historic district and the streets around downtown hold homes from the 1890s to the 1920s, many still on their original clay tile lateral with mortared joints, sitting under some of the oldest and largest street trees in the county. Steep runs sound like they should self-clear, but they scour unevenly and can leave solids stranded where the grade flattens near the bottom. Those lines need jetting rather than cabling, and they need a camera to find the flat spot rather than guesswork.
